Message From The Chair... March 2021

Hello friends,
This month I’d like to write a bit about ASQ/ANSI/ISO 26000-2010, Guidance on Social Responsibility. The introductory statement to this standard says “Organizations around the world and their stakeholders are becoming increasingly aware of the need for and benefits of socially responsible behavior. The objective of social responsibility is to contribute to sustainable development.” It goes on to say “This international Standard provides guidance on the underlying principles of social responsibility, recognizing social responsibility and engaging stakeholders, the core subjects and issues pertaining to social responsibility and on ways to integrate socially responsible behavior into the organization…This International Standard if intended to be useful to all types of organizations in the private, public and non-profit sectors, whether large or small, and whether operating on developed or developing countries.”
With this brief introduction, let’s look at the structure of the standard. It is comprised of 7 Core Subjects and 7 Principles. I have listed them below.
The 7 Core Subjects
  1. Organizational governance
  2. Human rights
  3. Labor practices
  4. The environment
  5. Fair operating practices
  6. Consumer issues
  7. Community involvement and development
The 7 Principles
  1. Accountability
  2. Transparency
  3. Ethical behavior
  4. Stakeholder interests
  5. Rule of law
  6. International behavior norms
  7. Human rights
This is quite a comprehensive list, is it not? In future messages, I will be discussing each of these 14 items in detail and how quality disciplines play a key role in each, as will as what tools the quality professional brings to the table in helping guide their organization to excellence in social responsibility.
Until then, stay safe.
