Waste of Electrical and electronic equipment and social impacts

Tens of millions of metric tons of electronic waste are generated annually worldwide. Due to its complex nature and diversity of materials, it is very hard to recycle electronic waste properly. On top of containing various hazardous substances, the quantities of electronic waste tend to increase years after years. This tendency is caused by the mass consumption of devices. Still, in our days, the vast majority of electronic waste collection methods are not even documented.

Too many quantities of e-waste end up in landfills, are illegally exported and are not safely recycled.

This presentation will describe the current situation, show the current legal framework, and initiate the conversation for practical solutions.

Aury Hathout M. Env, VEA®, CEA, is a certified environmental auditor and has a Master's degree in Environment combined with graduate education in Business Administration from the University of Sherbrooke.

Since 2008, Aury provides practical consulting services, including environmental compliance and management systems auditing in multiple industrial and services sectors - various manufactures, petroleum equipment, construction, municipalities, etc.
He is especially responsible for the environmental compliance of hundreds of electrical and electronic products sold worldwide, with any the following requirements: RoHS, REACH SVHC, WEEE, Conflict Minerals, Prop 65, etc.

Through his assessments, Aury is regularly in contact with over 2 500 of the most active manufacturers, suppliers, and distributors in the electronics field.
Aury also gives training, lectures, such as for Chemical Watch, is a regular contributor to the EP&T magazine 'Think Green' heading, and teaches Environmental Auditing at the University of Sherbrooke.
